Patient Loyalty Check
Why do my patients stay? See why your patients stay, how many send someone new, and what those relationships are worth over time.
“If you’re building or promoting a subscription-based medical practice, focus on why people stay, not just that they can leave.”Michael Tetreault, Editor-in-Chief, Concierge Medicine Today. DocPreneur Leadership Podcast.
Your patients decide every year whether to stay. Loyalty is the clearest sign that your care feels personal, and the easiest place to lose ground without noticing.
What you will walk away with
- Your Patient Loyalty Score, built from retention and referrals
- What a patient relationship is worth to your practice after costs
- A short reflection on where trust is earned and where it slips
- A simple 30-day plan to protect the relationships you have
Before you start
This is an educational estimate built on standard retention, referral, and lifetime-value math, applied only to numbers you enter. It is not financial, legal, tax, accounting, or medical advice. Enter totals only, never patient names or health information. Nothing you type leaves your browser. Read the full disclaimers, methodology, and sources.
Part 1: Who stays and who refers
Use the last 12 months. Estimates are fine.
Part 2: What a relationship is worth
Optional. Leave the fee at zero to skip this part.
Methodology, limitations, and sources
How the numbers work
- Retention rate is the share of last year’s patients still with you. Referral rate is the share of new patients who came from an existing patient.
- Patient Loyalty Score (0 to 100). Retention contributes up to 60 points, scaled across a 70% to 98% range. Referrals contribute up to 40 points, scaled against a 50% referral share. The weights are CMT editorial judgment, not a validated instrument.
- Estimated average relationship length is 1 divided by your annual attrition rate, capped at 20 years so very high retention does not produce unrealistic numbers.
- Net value per relationship is (annual fee minus direct cost) times relationship length, minus the cost to bring in the patient. It is shown ahead of gross revenue because revenue alone overstates what a relationship is worth. Values are not discounted for inflation or the time value of money.
Limitations
- “Patient Loyalty Score” and “Relational Equity” are CMT’s descriptive terms, not validated clinical or industry-standard measures.
- Benchmarks from CMT’s own research are first-party observations, not independently reviewed, and not a standard or prediction for any practice.
- New and growing practices often see more turnover early on. A lower score is a prompt to look closer, not a verdict.
- Rules on membership fees, scope of practice, patient communications, and tax treatment vary by state and circumstance. Consult a CPA and healthcare attorney before acting on any figure here.
